Hey there, fellow adventurers of life's beautiful journey! Today, I want to dive into a topic that's close to my heart and has been a recurring theme in my photography business: body image positivity.
Picture this: A client excitedly reaches out to book a photoshoot, eager to capture a special moment in their life. But then comes the caveat: "Can we schedule it for a few months from now? I want to get in shape first." Sound familiar? It's a scenario that plays out all too often in the world of photography, from big business personnel to fitness moguls to everyday individuals.
But why do we feel this incessant need to wait until we're "perfect" before embracing the camera? I've pondered this question countless times, and I believe it boils down to our innate desire to put our best foot forward in life. We want to present ourselves in the best possible light, both literally and figuratively. And while striving for self-improvement is admirable, it shouldn't come at the cost of our self-worth or delaying moments of joy and celebration.
Let me share a personal story to put things into perspective. I've always been enamored with the underwater world, captivated by its beauty and tranquility. Despite my deep love for the ocean, I found myself hesitating to indulge in an underwater photoshoot. Why? Because I allowed myself to be consumed by doubts and insecurities about my body.
After years of grappling with setbacks, including a spinal injury and caring for a neurodivergent kiddo, I found myself in a perpetual state of survival. The thought of being in front of the camera, especially underwater where every curve and contour is magnified, filled me with dread. I fixated on all the ways my body didn't measure up to societal standards of beauty. But then, something shifted. I realized that waiting for the "perfect" body was a futile endeavor. This is the body I have, with all its imperfections and scars, and it deserves to be celebrated just as it is. So, I took the plunge and booked an underwater session with the incredible Amanda from Oceans of Love. During the shoot, Amanda's warmth and genuine enthusiasm helped me shed my inhibitions and embrace my authentic self. And you know what? It was liberating. I emerged walking into that that photoshoot feeling empowered and alive, with a newfound appreciation for my body and all that it's capable of.
I now proudly display my favorite image from the shoot in my office as a reminder to myself—and to others—that true beauty lies in authenticity. When we embrace who we are, flaws and all, we radiate a magnetic energy that captivates those around us. It's not about conforming to society's standards; it's about boldly owning our uniqueness and celebrating the journey we're on.
So, my dear friends, I urge you to let go of the notion of perfection and embrace the beautiful messiness of being human. Don't let your insecurities hold you back from experiencing life to the fullest. Step in front of the camera, dance in the rain, laugh until your sides ache—because this is your story, and it's worth celebrating in all its imperfect glory.
Here's to embracing our authentic selves and living life unapologetically. Cheers to you, my fellow adventurers!
